Firstly, this post is for the less fortunate folks such as myself. Sorry guys. It’s no good being dishonest to people and most importantly to yourself. You have to accept the fact that people have an uncanny ability of smelling pretense no matter the distance. Social Media included. ;D
Secondly, I love coffee. So this is about coffee.
Did you know a coffee drinker’s average cup of coffee a day is between 3-4 cups? Now, since probably we’re not all coffee addicts, obviously, you wouldn’t care. But my point in saying is that’s a lot of coffee. Let me just mention that I’ve worked the BPO industry for eight years now. And in the span of eight years, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone to Starbucks for my coffee run for the day. Can you imagine the amount of money I’ve spent? Iced Latte back in 2006 already costs 100Php. I really don’t want to do the math. But that’s millions of pesos spent on coffee alone. Not just one million, or two or three. That’s lots of millions of pesos for eight years! And that’s not including the sausage rolls or waffles I’ve ordered over the years. Add to that, the coffee I’ve bought from CBTL since 2008. And they’re more costly than Starbucks.
I mean, that’s a lot of money. A lot. Naturally, I’m broke. Hahaha! Now, I’m writing this because I feel I need to share this truth for the common good. Especially, to my co-workers in the BPO Industry and for those who are just starting out. If you’re working in a different field, I sure hope you’ll find this helpful too. So, here we go.
My simple recommendations:
- Drop the pretense. Stop being delusional. You know you’re not a millionaire. You’re not rich. But you’re not poor either. You are someone who needs to save for the future just like everybody else. BUT. But, you’re a coffee addict. And you know, you won’t last a day without having three cups of latte. Or Caramel Macchiato. Or the Red Velvet drink. Or the Apple Pie tea latte. If you haven’t made that computation in your head yet, stop reading and think about it for a while. Thought about it yet? How about now? While you’re at it. Make that U-turn and head to McCafe instead. A cup of latte costs only 85 Php for a regular size. Now, while the Iced Latte costs as much as Starbucks’ tall drink, let me tell you what you can do. You’re hungry, aren’t you? Go buy a 50 Php McDo meal and upgrade your drink to a hot (additional 40 Php) or cold (additional 60 Php) coffee. Well, we can both agree that’s great savings, can’t we? Now, that’s a start. You can work your way to making more savings, I’m sure.
- Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. Now, I’m really not much for burgers. I’m really just the cheeseburger-once-in-a-blue-moon girl. But when it comes to burgers, you can’t really say no to BK’s whopper, can you? But, that’s just not what BK has to offer. They have a Mocha BK Joe. And a Mocha BK Joe Frost which can be a good ALTERNATIVE to Caramel Macchiato. Well, it’s originally with a chocolate syrup so ask the cashier to change it to a caramel syrup. (Catch: Not all BK franchise can offer it so go to BK in malls.) It only costs 75 Php compared to 150 Php of Starbucks. And it tastes so much better. You can take my word for it. Agreed that you won’t find BK everywhere like McDo but we all know the thrill of the chase, don’t we? ‘Nuff said. 😀
- Again, you ARE someone saving for the future. The word you’re looking for is “alternative.” You need something to trade Starbucks or CBTL off. For a quick caffeine fix, and something you can have handy, on your next pay out, go to the grocery and buy a pack of Great Taste White. This coffee, my dear friends, is a great latte alternative. Especially with ice. Go for it!
- Anything in excess is not good. So when it comes to coffee drinking, planning is the key. (Naks!) You need to plan your grocery. And you need to think about your health too. So, once in a while, let go of caffeine and have some tea. A box of Lipton Brown Tea is less than a hundred pesos and the content is more than able to sustain you from one pay out to the next. Don’t forget your creamer/milk. Tea latte is a good alternative for coffee. You get that satisfaction without the kick. Good enough. Now remember, people, we are talking about addiction here. It can either be good or bad. Choose good. And choosing good means, sitting down, making your list and planning ahead how to consume your most addicted drink. It’s important. I don’t need to remind you that your life depends on it. If you haven’t done that yet, you better get started. 😀
These are my simple recommendations. To be quite honest, I was very hesitant to share this at first but I figured, who am I to deny my friends, colleagues, family and readers the secret to a fulfilled life? No. I can’t do that. I won’t do that. So, I’m pretty sure you have your recommendations too. Go ahead and share it in the comments section. Let’s make the world a better place one low-priced addiction at a time. ^_^
