Memories of Discovery (Chapter 1, Continued)

imageAll things new in this strange, bright place yet there’s something familiar about it. Some things can be hard to explain sometimes. It can be hard to make sense of what’s giving you peace, quiet, joy inside and the total strangeness of everything else that’s going on around you.

He’s holding this colorful little things that become something else entirely when you put them together in the right places.

“So you put this block here. And you put the other block there. And see? You’ve made a castle.” The excited voice said.

He looked at him and then looked at the creation. He thought, ‘That was amazing!”

He looked back at him. He searches his face and he can see that he’s doing the same thing to him. So he smiled and tried to hold his hands together.

“You like it! Mom, he likes it! He’s clapping his hands. Hahaha!” Said his brother.

He discovers the first dirt, a hard floor. He hears something beautiful coming out of colorful things. He develops an appetite and begins to have his favorite food. ‘That mushy sweet thing.’ His brother calls it.

“Here we go! This is my favorite, Danny. You’re going to love this too, I think. Open your mouth.” The brother instructed him.

And he liked it.

—————————

“Come on, Danny! You can do it.” His brother encouraged him.

“It’s hard, Jimmy. I don’t think I can.” He responded.

“You can do it. There’s a certain way of doing it. Here, I’ll show you.” Jimmy said.

And he showed Danny how to tie his shoelace.

———————-

“Danny, look! He’s playing on his own.” Jimmy called him.

“He looks like he’s losing his mind chasing his tail like that.’ Danny gave his observation.

They both laughed.

———————

He came home crying with a swollen face.

“Jimmy…” He cried out.

“What happened Danny?” His worried brother enquired.

“The ‘stinking bag boys’ (because that’s what Jimmy calls them) punched me. It hurts, Jimmy.” Danny cried out.

Jimmy turned red. “Those stinking brothers!!! Come on, Danny. We’ll make them pay for what they did to you!”

Jimmy marched out the doorway and made his way to the ‘stinking bag brothers.’

Danny saw it all. He saw how his little brother – compared with those boys –Ā  talked to them and then suddenly punched them in the face one by one. He didn’t stop until all of them were down on the ground.

A boy stood up and punched Jimmy but Jimmy was relentless. He punched him back. He punched them over & over again. They tried to beat him but he was giving them the ‘dance’ of their childhood. With every blow Danny could hear the boys cry in pain. And with all their cries, Jimmy was shouting the words, “You don’t touch my brother ever again! You hear me?!”

That very moment, Danny discovered what a hero was like.

Jimmy rushed back to Danny who was standing outside their gate. They both went inside. And then Jimmy immediately closed the gate.

“It’s alright, Danny. They won’t touch you again.” Jimmy said looking all red, sweaty and obviously, in pain.

Danny would never forget that day. That day, he thought of wanting to be exactly like Jimmy. Even though, no one told him to be.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with admiring someone or getting inspired by them. What will make things wrong is trying so desperately hard to copy exactly how they live their life. And to show other people how you are so much better than they are.

Sometimes we try so hard to be someone else, we get lost while we are at it. And then we forget how amazing a creature we are simply because we decided not to hear things properly.
